Static PNG, JPEG or WebP · 20 MiB and 40 MP input. Working image is fitted to 2,400 px per side and 4 MP; download uses working dimensions.

0 keeps original colors; 100 removes all color. Used in Grayscale mode.
Brightness at or above this value becomes white; darker pixels become black. Used in Threshold mode.

Adjust a slider or enter an exact value, then click Apply effect. Every application starts from the original working image. Threshold uses weighted RGB brightness, without dithering or adaptive document cleanup.

Ready. Choose an image.

Original transparency is preserved in PNG and WebP. JPEG fills it with the selected background color. Original EXIF and GPS metadata are not copied. For exact black-and-white RGB values, choose PNG; lossy formats can add intermediate shades.

A FEW SIMPLE STEPS

How to use Grayscale / Threshold

  1. Choose a static PNG, JPEG or WebP image and review its working dimensions.
  2. Choose Grayscale or Threshold. Adjust its slider or enter an exact value, and optionally invert the effect.
  3. Click Apply effect to create a preview from the original working image. Changing settings clears the old result.
  4. Download PNG, JPEG or WebP. Use PNG for exact black-and-white threshold pixels.

Why use this tool?

Your image is never uploaded to any server. Conversion and downloads run locally with Canvas and a disposable browser worker. No accounts, remote APIs or persistent input storage are required. Clear releases your source and result.

Tool inputs stay in your browser. Only your theme preference is saved on this device.

A few things worth knowing

What is the difference between grayscale and threshold?

Grayscale converts RGB color to weighted brightness using 0.299 red + 0.587 green + 0.114 blue, rounded to the nearest byte. Its amount blends this effect with the original colors. Threshold maps that brightness to black or white, using white at or above the chosen threshold. This is a simple global threshold without dithering or adaptive cleanup.

What do the sliders control?

Grayscale amount runs from 0% (original colors) to 100% (fully grayscale). Threshold runs from 0 to 255 and controls the black/white cutoff. Invert reverses the calculated gray or binary value before any grayscale amount blending. Slider and exact number inputs stay synchronized. Click Apply effect after changing a value.

What are the image limits?

One static PNG, JPEG or WebP up to 20 MiB, 40 MP and 16,384 pixels per side. Larger images are fitted to a working size within 2,400 pixels per side and 4 MP. Downloads use the working dimensions and are capped at 32 MiB.

Are transparency and metadata preserved?

PNG and WebP preserve the original alpha channel; JPEG fills transparency with your background color. Original EXIF and GPS metadata are not copied. Browser color and orientation handling applies. Lossy JPEG and WebP can introduce intermediate shades; use PNG for exact binary RGB values.
