Consistent punctuation, with choices you control Local processing
Up to 200,000 UTF-16 text units. CR / CRLF line endings become LF.
Choose punctuation conversions

These are literal substitutions. Dash conversion adds no spaces; quote conversion does not infer opening or closing quotes. Review changes to language-specific punctuation, mathematics and code.

YOUR RESULT

Ready. Choose conversions and normalize your text.

Original text remains in the editor. Other punctuation, letters, accents, emoji and spacing stay as written. Editing input or options clears previous results.

A FEW SIMPLE STEPS

How to use Punctuation Normalizer

  1. Paste text or load the example. Curly quotes and ellipses are selected by default.
  2. Choose any optional conversions for dashes, Unicode hyphens, mathematical minus, guillemets or fullwidth punctuation and symbols.
  3. Select Normalize punctuation. Compare the original and result, and review the substitution table.
  4. Copy or download the normalized text as TXT. Editing text or options clears the previous result.
PRIVATE BY DESIGN

Why use this tool?

All substitutions happen on your device without uploads, accounts, dependencies or saved input history. Your original remains available for comparison, and the change counts show exactly which source characters were replaced. Text and markup are never executed.

Tool inputs stay in your browser. Only your theme preference is saved on this device.

A few things worth knowing

Which curly quotes and ellipses are converted?

The quotes option maps U+2018, U+2019, U+201A and U+201B to straight apostrophe U+0027, and U+201C, U+201D, U+201E and U+201F to straight double quote U+0022. Ellipsis U+2026 becomes three ASCII periods. These two options are enabled by default. Prime marks, modifier-letter apostrophes and other lookalikes are preserved.

How do dash, hyphen and minus conversions differ?

The dash option maps en dash U+2013 and em dash U+2014 to hyphen-minus U+002D. The Unicode hyphen option maps U+2010 and non-breaking hyphen U+2011. The separate mathematical minus option maps U+2212. These options start off, replace each source with one hyphen-minus and do not add or remove surrounding spaces. Other dash forms and soft hyphens stay unchanged.

What do the guillemet and fullwidth options cover?

Guillemets U+00AB and U+00BB become straight double quotes; U+2039 and U+203A become straight apostrophes. Fullwidth conversion covers U+FF01–FF0F, U+FF1A–FF20, U+FF3B–FF40 and U+FF5B–FF5E, including punctuation and ASCII-style symbols such as plus, dollar and angle brackets. Fullwidth letters, digits, spaces and other compatibility forms are not converted. Both options start off.

Does this correct grammar or create smart quotes?

No. It applies explicit character substitutions once, with no language detection, quote pairing, spacing cleanup, sentence correction or smart-quote generation. Text inside code, URLs and quotations is treated exactly like other text. Review language-specific punctuation and mathematical or code content before using the result. Use Whitespace Cleaner for spacing changes.

How are replacements counted?

The total counts source code points replaced, not inserted characters or changed words. One ellipsis becoming three periods counts as one replacement. The table groups by original character in first-seen order and includes its Unicode code point, replacement and occurrence count. With every option off, punctuation stays unchanged.

What are the limits and privacy behavior?

Input accepts 200,000 UTF-16 text units after CRLF/CR line endings normalize to LF. No other normalization or trimming is performed. Unpaired UTF-16 surrogates are rejected so TXT export cannot silently replace them; Unicode Inspector can examine those inputs. Oversized input returns an error without truncation or partial results. Clear keeps option choices; Try an example restores defaults. Text is not uploaded or stored in browser storage.
