Byte Size Converter

Convert bits and bytes between decimal and binary units, from bytes to exabytes and exbibytes. Keep large values precise with exact arithmetic, clearly marked rounding and downloadable results.

Nonnegative plain decimal. Up to 100 digits total and 30 decimal places; use a dot as the decimal separator.
Half-up rounding. The exact result is always shown separately.

Two systems, one clear answer

1 kB (often written KB) = 1,000 B.
1 KiB = 1,024 B.
1 B = 8 bit.

MB means megabytes; Mbit means megabits. Fractional bits and bytes are allowed for calculations. Swapping units keeps your entered amount.

YOUR CONVERSION

Choose your units and enter a size.

Ready. All calculations run locally.

Decimal and binary prefixes are explicit. No automatic interpretation of ambiguous labels. This converts quantities, not transfer rates, disk usage or compressed file sizes.

A FEW SIMPLE STEPS

How to use Byte Size Converter

  1. Enter a nonnegative decimal amount, using a dot for any fractional part.
  2. Choose the source and target units. Decimal prefixes use powers of 1,000; binary prefixes use powers of 1,024.
  3. Choose the rounded display precision and select Convert size. Inspect the exact result separately.
  4. Copy the exact result or download a text report containing all exact conversions. Swapping units keeps your entered amount.

Why use this tool?

Calculations run on your device using exact integer arithmetic. No values or files are uploaded, no account is needed and no calculation history is stored. Exact decimal output makes rounding visible instead of silently losing digits in large quantities.

Tool inputs stay in your browser. Only your theme preference is saved on this device.

A few things worth knowing

What is the difference between KB and KiB?

This tool uses kB for the decimal kilobyte, often written KB: 1 kB = 1,000 bytes. KiB is the binary kibibyte: 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes. Likewise MB uses 1,000² bytes and MiB uses 1,024² bytes. Labels in other software can be ambiguous, so select the definition you intend.

Are bits and bytes different?

Yes. One byte (B) is eight bits (bit). Mbit means megabits and MB means megabytes. The converter supports unprefixed bits and bytes, decimal prefixes kilo through exa, and binary prefixes kibi through exbi: 26 units in total.

How precise are the results?

Input is parsed as decimal text and calculations use BigInt integer ratios, without floating-point conversion. All supported ratios have terminating decimal expansions, so the exact field and report show their complete values. The other result and comparison table use up to 0, 2, 6 or 12 decimal places with half-up rounding. An approximation mark means digits were rounded, including small values that display as zero.

What input is accepted?

Use at most 100 decimal digits total with at most 30 after the decimal point. Zero, fractions and leading zeros are supported; a dot is the decimal separator. Negative values, signs, exponents, commas, spaces inside numbers and unit suffixes are rejected. Fractional bits and bytes are mathematical quantities, not claims about how a real file is stored.

Does this calculate download time or disk space used?

No. It converts quantities only. It does not measure transfer speed, account for filesystem allocation, compression, metadata or reserved disk space. Swapping units leaves the typed amount unchanged and clears the previous result until you recalculate.

Are my inputs stored or sent anywhere?

No. The tool calculates in your browser without network requests or calculation history. Copying and downloading happen only when you choose. The external NIST link opens its documentation when selected; your entered amount is not added to that link.
